How do you grow Shampoo Ginger from the root?
Simply find a shady spot on your property, dig about a 3-inch to 5-inch hole, then bury the shampoo ginger root. Make sure to add mulch on top and water it in. If you are planting it in a pot, prepare a nice, all-natural potting soil, then bury the shampoo ginger root about 2–3 inches deep. Cover it up, mulch it, and water it in.

Can I actually use shampoo ginger as shampoo?
Yes! Once the red pine cone-shaped flower matures, they fill with a fragrant, slippery gel. You can squeeze this gel directly into your hand and use it as a natural shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap, and more!
How long does shampoo ginger take to grow?
From planting a rhizome, it usually takes 6 to 10 months to see the flowers form in the summertime. The plant grows actively in warm months and goes dormant in cooler months.
Does shampoo ginger need full sun or shade?
Shampoo ginger prefers shade or filtered sunlight. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, especially in hot climates.
Can shampoo ginger grow in pots or containers?
Yes, it grows very well in containers. Just make sure the pot has good drainage and enough room for the roots to spread. Use rich, loose soil and mulch to help keep moisture.
Will shampoo grow all year?
Shampoo ginger that grows best in the summer. That is when their pine coneflowers are in bloom. During winter, it will go dormant, meaning all the leaves will die back and drop to the ground. That is normal; the plant will start to grow back in the spring.
How do I harvest the gel from shampoo ginger?
Wait until the pine coneflowers are mature and plump. Gently squeeze them, and a fragrant, clear gel will ooze out. You can use it fresh or store it in the fridge for a few days.
