Vetiver Clumping Grass is a deep-rooted, non-invasive clumping grass used around the world for erosion control, natural mulch fertilizer, building soil, and natural filtration. It’s also known for its fragrant roots, which are used to make essential oils, soaps, and traditional medicines. If you’re looking for a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plant that improves your land, builds your soil, and adds beauty to your landscape, growing Vetiver Clumping Grass is an incredible choice!

Each Vetiver "Plug" (Propagation) will be about 12 inches long, rooted, and ready to be planted in the soil as soon as your order arrives at your property

We like to grow these around the rows of food we grow, along our swales, and even as a living fence. Learn more about it below!

Why Grow Vetiver

  • Prevents Erosion: Vetiver roots can grow over 10 feet deep, locking soil in place on slopes and riverbanks.
  • Improves Soil Health: Its roots pull up nutrients from deep layers of soil, naturally enriching the topsoil over time.
  • Filters Water & Runoff: Acts like a living filter, trapping sediments and purifying greywater or drainage.
  • Non-Invasive: Vetiver does not spread by seed—it grows in neat clumps, making it easy to manage and safe for all landscapes.
  • Beautiful & Functional: The tall, lush green leaves add a tropical look while protecting your land and garden.

How to Grow Vetiver

  1. Planting Location: Choose a sunny area with well-drained soil. Vetiver loves full sun and warm conditions.
  2. Spacing: Plant plugs 12–18 inches apart for ground cover or 6–12 inches apart for dense hedgerows.
  3. Watering: Water regularly for the first few weeks to help roots establish. Once mature, Vetiver becomes drought-tolerant.
  4. Maintenance: Trim back the leaves every few months to encourage new growth and keep plants neat.
  5. Fertilizer: Optional—Vetiver grows well even in poor soils, but compost or other natural fertilizer you feed your fruit trees will boost growth.

FAQs

What exactly comes in each order?
Each box includes 10, 20, or more healthy, rooted Vetiver 'Plugs'. These propagations arrive at your property with roots and are approximately 9 to 12 inches tall. They are ready for immediate planting.
How should I care for the slips when they arrive?
Please plant them right away. We recommend letting them get established by planting them in pots. Vetiver is hardy once established but appreciates quick planting after shipping.
Is Vetiver safe for kids and pets?
Yes. Vetiver is non-toxic, and ours is grown with all natural practices and without harmful chemicals.
What climates can Vetiver grow in?
Vetiver thrives in USDA Zones 7 to 11. It loves full sun and is drought-resistant after it's established. Because it is sensitive to frost, growing outside its recommended zones is not advised unless you have a plan for winter protection.
How tall does Vetiver grow?
Once mature, Vetiver typically reaches 3 to 5 feet tall and forms dense, beautiful clumps with long, fragrant roots.
What benefits does Vetiver bring to a property or garden?
Vetiver is known as Miracle Grass for good reason. It stabilizes soil, prevents erosion, restores fertility through chop-and-drop, strengthens fruit tree health, filters water runoff, detoxifies soil, feeds livestock, and can be turned into biochar. Its essential oils are also used in soaps, perfumes, natural insect repellents, and woven goods like mats, hats, and thatching.
Can Vetiver repel or deter termites?
Yes. Once established, Vetiver roots produce natural compounds like Nootkatone and other sesquiterpenes that act as feeding deterrents, disrupt termite digestion, and interfere with their nervous system.
Is this variety invasive?
No. We a sterile, non-invasive type known for strong erosion control and predictable, clumping growth.
How is my order packaged for shipping?
Each slip is bundled with moisture-retaining material (paper towel), wrapped in a compostable plastic bag, and then secured with a rubberband to keep roots fresh during transit. Orders are shipped quickly to ensure live, healthy arrival. Plant as soon as you receive the Vetiver cuttings.
Can Vetiver survive extreme heat or cold?
Vetiver handles heat very well, but frost is its weakness.
What are some common uses for Vetiver around the home or farm?
People use Vetiver for erosion control, privacy screening, wind buffering, soil rebuilding, water filtration, livestock feed, and more. It's also widely used in permaculture and regenerative agriculture systems.
